Just Make Art Podcast
We talked about painting as a primal need to make marks, why the studio can feel like a scratch-off ticket you keep buying with your time, and how the best ideas often arrive only after you start. Along the way we bounced off quotes from artists like Jenny Saville, Julian Schnabel, Kerry James Marshall, Ai Weiwei, Lisa Yuskavage, Gerhard Richter, and Chuck Close to get specific about process, risk, and the messy realities of creative work.
Then the conversation turned toward meaning. I shared how my work takes on the history and construct of race, especially the invention and evolution of whiteness, and how that construct shows up in family history and private thought. I also reflected on living in China as a visible outsider, experiencing attention and privilege that made power dynamics impossible to ignore. I have been on a guest few different podcasts before, but this episode was special. Click on the image above to go Spotify or click HERE to watch on Youtube.
Further Triennial
In 2027, visual arts organizations across Northern California will premier exhibitions and programs that explore the creative life of the region. Some will spotlight contemporary artists, others will excavate untold histories, and still others will explore resonant themes and social issues.
And guess who is taking part? Yours truly! I am curating a show at the Pence Gallery in Davis California.
Northern California is a place where unorthodox thinking, offbeat creativity, and unconventional identities seek new horizons. Many artists have journeyed westward until they hit the Pacific, but this did not stop them from advancing, through art, still further. By way of metaphysical growth, political transformation, artistic innovation, or self-creation, artists in Northern California push toward the unknown and unrealized. HEAVY
If you have been wondering what I have been up to lately, it’s been this. The last time I curated a show was sometime in the early 2000s in a basement apartment around Chicago's Wicker Park Neighborhood. The idea & desire to put on a group show of artists that I know and love has been floating around my head for YEARS. About six months ago, I finally pulled the trigger and now it’s time!
